Current Graduate Students:
Kyle Smart: PhD Student (2021-Current)
Kyle conducts experiments to determine how microbes process organic carbon within soils. He uses the concentration of soil O2 and CO2 along with the carbon isotope composition of soil CO2 to assess the composition of the organic substrate being respired by microbes and the microbial carbon use efficiency of soil microbes.
Recent Paper accepted at Biogeosciences!
Alyssa Reinhardt: PhD Student (2023-Present) MS (2023)
Alyssa uses field-based studies to understand natural carbon stabilization in soils across the world. She is studying how a complex network of organisms (plants, termites, and microbes) combine to cause organic carbon naturally stabilized as inorganic calcite in South African soils. She is also studying seasonal patterns in soil respiration in NE Ohio. Alyssa also completed an MS degree entitled: "Seasonal and Environmental Influences on Soil O2 and CO2 Concentrations in Abandoned Mine Tailings"
Suravi Paul: MS Student (2023-Present)
Suravi is conducting laboratory experiments to investigate how changes in moisture inputs affect root and root associated microbial respiration signals.
Past Graduate Students:
Leah Stanevich: MS (2024)
Leah studied Late Cretaceous terrestrial deposits to investigate how changes in sea-level impacted affected the geochemistry and nutrient availability along a terrestrial-marine gradient along the Western Interior Seaway
